Critical Illness Insurance

Medical advances have significantly increased the chances of surviving serious illnesses. Most of us know someone (a relative, co-worker, neighbor, etc.) that has survived a heart attack or a stroke. That’s the good news.

Unfortunately, surviving a serious illness can lead to financial hardship resulting from loss of earnings and incurred expenses not covered by other forms of insurance. Critical illness insurance was designed for just such circumstances.

A critical illness policy pays a lump sum benefit as soon as the policyholder is diagnosed with an illness specifically covered by the plan. That lump sum benefit can be used for any purpose whatsoever, such as to pay household bills, experimental treatments, copays and deductibles, travel to treatment centers or childcare.

MetLife offers a critical illness plan to MBA members at a special group rate. You may apply for benefits from $10,000 to $50,000. The plan may be paid for through payroll deduction, if available from your employer.

The six conditions covered by the plan are:
  • Heart Attack
  • Stroke
  • Cancer
  • Kidney Failure
  • Major Organ Transplant
  • Coronary Artery Bypass Graft
